The S&P/TSX Composite Index measures the performance of the broad Canadian equity market and is the principal benchmark for Canada-listed stocks. It is composed primarily of securities listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and is weighted by float-adjusted market capitalization, so larger and more investable companies have greater influence. The index is important as the standard gauge for Canadian equity performance and as the parent universe for major S&P/TSX sub-indices such as the S&P/TSX 60 and sector benchmarks.
